This position requires a highly skilled and experienced individual who can perform complex computed tomography (CT) scans and provide exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform highly sophisticated CT scanning of heads and/or bodies, receiving patients, explaining methods of procedures, positioning patients, and making exposures necessary for the requested examination.

More specifically, performs the following:
Reviews all requests from physicians and other healthcare providers independently, seeking guidance from a radiologist for difficult non-routine exams. Determines technical factors, positioning, number, and thickness of scans, etc., to satisfy the requirements. Evaluates the nature of critical and emergency procedures and rearranges patient priorities to accommodate them. Maintains records of examinations performed, scans taken, contrast reactions, contrast usage, etc. Maintains permanent records of scans in the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS). Prepares the scanning room, ensuring that sterile supplies, contrast materials, catheters, and other required equipment are present and laid out. Starts IVs when required. Prepares and administers contrast material (IV) and limited numbers of anesthetic or antispasmodic drugs such as lidocaine, epinephrine, and benadryl under the direction of a radiologist. Notifies the radiologist at the completion of the CT scan before the patient is released from the scanning position, in anticipation that extra scans and/or position changes may be required. Notifies the radiologist of significant scans requiring their immediate attention and visualization while the patient is undergoing examination. Performs operator-level preventive maintenance and care as required. Notifies the appropriate individual/office of equipment malfunction. Operates film processing machines. Provides on-the-job training to new employees, both civilian and military. Independently evaluates the daily schedule to triage patients for the accommodation of add-on, work-in patients. Stays abreast of new technology in CT/MRI. Independently reviews, prepares, and submits SOPs for radiologist review for integration on a regular basis.

  • May assist in performing a wide variety of highly complex magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examinations of human subjects to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury. Receives and reviews requests from physicians and other healthcare providers for MRI examinations of patients. Determines the condition(s) at issue and the best way to meet the needs of the individual case. Receives and positions the patient for examination. Explains procedures and actions to allay fears, reduce claustrophobia, and secure maximum cooperation.
  • In the absence of MRI and CT-specific workload, i.e., patients, or on an as-needed basis, is required to perform radiographic/report filing, receptionist duties, or routine radiography as dictated by the needs of the Department of Radiology.
