About the Job

As a Tanker Driver, you will be responsible for hauling various types of liquids and gases, including water, gasoline, and hydrogen. You will need to exercise extreme caution when hauling and offloading these materials, as they can be environmentally hazardous if released.

The liability for hauling and offloading hazardous materials requires high levels of insurance and premiums. Tanker drivers are not hired if inexperienced or with questionable driving behavior.

You will also be required to keep detailed records of your hauls, including reading gauges to ensure accurate delivery and to detect any leaks.

The Tanker endorsement requires passing a written knowledge test, and it is advised to obtain the Hazardous Materials endorsement or the Hazardous Material-Tanker combination endorsement.

Route Type

Over the Road (OTR) routes are likely those that most people with minimal knowledge of the trucking industry envision drivers working. OTR drivers are generally paid by the mile and are on the road for much of the year with limited home time.

Driving experience, trailer experience, and job overview are also important factors to consider when applying for this position.
