Rotating (United States of America) Job Overview: Under the supervision of the Clinical Manager of Perioperative Services, the Operating Room Specialist is responsible for executing all tasks in a manner that exemplifies Service Excellence towards patients, medical staff, colleagues, and other departments. This role requires maintaining technical proficiency to cater to a diverse patient demographic ranging from infants to the elderly. The specialist prepares the Operating Room with the necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies essential for patient care while demonstrating a solid understanding of sterile procedures.Key Responsibilities:
- Organizes the Operating Room with the appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each specific procedure as per departmental guidelines. Utilizes pre-printed preference cards for selecting necessary items for surgical cases.
- Exhibits proficiency in assisting the surgeon and the perioperative team during surgical interventions.
- Adheres to departmental protocols regarding scrubbing, gowning, gloving, and maintaining strict aseptic technique.
- Ensures strict aseptic practices when unwrapping sterile supplies and preparing for procedures.
- Demonstrates skill in the proper handling of surgical specimens and medications within the sterile environment.
- Maintains awareness of responsibilities during surgical counts (sponge, sharps, miscellaneous items, and instruments) as required.
- Complies with all departmental guidelines for cleaning and caring for instruments, including sterilization processes for immediate use and proper decontamination before sterilization.
- Maintains proficiency in the use of equipment and supplies, ensuring safety in areas such as electrosurgery, laser, and power equipment, along with proper handling of needles and sharp instruments.
- Displays the ability to manage unexpected situations with composure; acts appropriately in emergencies and prioritizes tasks effectively.
- Operates within the legal parameters of the job description, adhering to departmental standards and procedures.
- Completion of Vocational or Technical training in Surgical Technology or a training program in the US Military or Public Health Service.
- Certification as a Surgical Technician and Basic Life Support certification are required.
- 0-1 years of relevant work experience is required.
- Must hold and maintain a certified surgical technologist credential from a nationally recognized credentialing body.
- Alternatively, candidates who have completed an accredited surgical technology program but have not yet obtained certification must do so within 12 months of graduation.
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a closely-knit team.
- Proficiency in computer systems, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Prior experience in surgical technology is advantageous.
- Decision Making: Ability to make informed decisions guided by general instructions and practices, with some interpretation required.
- Problem Solving: Ability to address routine problems through clear directions and procedures while identifying opportunities for improvement.

Employees in this role must be capable of providing patient care across various age groups: Neonatal (Birth to 6 months), Youth (6 months to 16 years), Young Adult (16-30 years), Middle Age, and Elderly (60+).
Physical Nature of the Job:
Medium work: Requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently. The role is physically demanding, necessitating standing and/or moving throughout the majority of the shift.
