Job Overview:


We are seeking a dedicated Optometric Assistant to collaborate with our team of optometrists, ensuring that patients receive exceptional levels of optometric care.

In this role, you will work closely under the guidance of optometrists, providing essential technical and support services to enhance the overall efficiency of our practice.


Key Responsibilities:
Accurately document patients' medical and visual histories, as well as prepare relevant clinical information for the optometrists. Measure and record patient vitals as needed in the electronic medical record (EMR). Conduct preliminary testing, including assessments of visual skills, extraocular muscle function, and pupillary responses. Perform diagnostic tests such as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Visual Fields, and Diabetic Imaging. Maintain precise records and reports as directed by the optometrist. Administer eye drops as prescribed. Assist in therapeutic procedures, including foreign body extractions.


Handle incoming phone calls and patient communications, evaluating the nature of inquiries and managing triage effectively.

Oversee the scheduling of appointments for the optometrists.

Ensure that diagnostic and therapeutic instruments are maintained in a clean and accurate condition. Regularly assess the status of instruments and coordinate repairs or recalibrations as needed. Keep ophthalmic instruments and medications organized and sterile.

Address patient concerns promptly, either resolving them or directing them to the appropriate personnel for further assistance.

Facilitate coordination of patient care with optical dispensing, membership services, family practice, ophthalmology, pharmacy, and other departments within the organization.


Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and standards of conduct regarding patient treatment and confidentiality.

Perform additional duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
Experience


A minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience in an optometric or ophthalmic setting under the supervision of an optometrist or ophthalmologist, or successful completion of a JCAHPO accredited ophthalmic medical technology program is required. Alternatively, one (1) year in a healthcare support role with on-the-job training in the optometry training program may be considered.

Education

A High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) is required.

License, Certification, Registration

Must obtain a Paraoptometric Assistant Certificate within 24 months of hire from the American Optometric Association, or an equivalent certification from a recognized body.

Registered Medical Assistant certification (Washington) is required within 2 months of hire.

Additional Requirements:


Proven experience and proficiency with ophthalmic instruments, including auto-refractors, auto-lensometers, non-contact tonometers, and visual field testing equipment.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Ability to operate effectively in a professional environment within a managed care organization. Familiarity with optometric terminology and equipment is preferred.

Preferred Qualifications:
Three (3) years of experience in an optometric or ophthalmic practice is preferred.

Basic understanding of organizational policies and culture is advantageous.

Knowledge of basic science and optics, as well as familiarity with optometric procedures related to preliminary testing, is preferred.

Experience with HealthConnect is a plus.
