Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced lifeguard to join our team at Okaloosa County, FL. As a Senior Lifeguard, you will be responsible for providing protection of life on county beaches, administering first aid and lifesaving techniques, and enforcing safety rules and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Observe and supervise beach activities, monitor marine and weather conditions, and identify potential dangers.
  • Initiate or assist with rescues, administer first aid, and provide basic life support care and treatment.
  • Participate in the care and upkeep of assigned equipment, hoist and lower swimming safety flags, and rotate signage as required.
  • Assist with enforcement of Beach Safety rules, including state and local laws, and control the scene and non-injured parties.
  • Maintain logs of daily procedures, complete reports and forms, and restock consumable supplies as needed.
  • Attend training sessions, maintain certifications, and respond to public inquiries and direct concerns to the appropriate authority.
  • Develop and direct seasonal lifeguard training programs, teach public outreach courses, and perform technical rescue during flood events.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid United States Lifesaving Association qualification or equivalent lifeguard training.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR provider certification and become a CPR instructor within one year of hire.
  • Florida EMT certification required, or must obtain within eighteen months of hire.
  • Swift Water Rescue certification required, or must be obtained within one year of hire.
  • Requires a valid driver license.
Physical Requirements

Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, or in excess of 25 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

Must ascend/descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs or hands and arms.

Must be able to bend the body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.

Must be able to bend legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).

Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.

Must be able to reach, extend hand(s) in any direction; and to handle, seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hand(s).

Must be able to pick, pinch or otherwise work primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm.

Must be able to stand and/or walk for more than 50% of the time, with running occasionally.

Tolerance for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions is required.

Physical demands exceed those of sedentary work.

Language Ability

Requires the ability to read a variety of policy and procedure manuals, work orders, logs, technical data, etc.

Must be able to speak with clarity, voice control and confidence and to articulate information to others.

Must be able to prepare written reports, using appropriate format, punctuation, spelling and grammar.

Intelligence

Requires the ability to apply principles of emergency medicine and common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions.

Must have the ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

Numerical Aptitude

Must be able to add and subtract totals, multiply and divide, calculate percentages and decimals.

Interpersonal Temperament

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond receiving instructions.

Must be adaptable to performing under stress when confronted with emergencies or tight deadlines.

Requires the ability to exercise consistent tact and courtesy when in frequent contact with various professionals, county staff, and the general public.
