At Houston Methodist, the Registered Nurse (RN) PRN role is a licensed nursing professional who operates at the Competent to Proficient level as per Benner's model of clinical practice.
Key Responsibilities
The RN PRN role delivers professional nursing care to a diverse array of patients, performs nursing assessments, assists with examinations and treatments, provides patient education, and maintains accurate medical records.
This position ensures effective and efficient direct patient care, addressing varied and complex patient needs.
The RN PRN collaborates with physicians and the interprofessional healthcare team to facilitate, coordinate, and uphold compassionate, efficient, and high-quality care, aiming for optimal treatment outcomes.
Clinical Competence
This role requires demonstrating clinical proficiency in patient care, utilizing technology, administering medications, executing procedures, and managing emergencies, while advocating for patient and family rights.
Leadership and Teamwork
The RN PRN may assume leadership roles with increasing responsibilities, which may include participating in or leading unit and shared governance initiatives, serving as a charge nurse or preceptor for students or new staff, and contributing to service line or hospital-wide initiatives in collaboration with management.

Utilizes therapeutic communication, including active listening and teaching, to build relationships with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team to collaborate on care plans.

Service Essential Functions
Adheres to patient and family-centered care standards as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document. Conducts nursing assessments, assists with examinations and treatments, and maintains medical records. Practices in alignment with principles of cultural diversity and inclusion.
Develops, updates, and communicates care plans, including discharge plans, in partnership with patients, families, and the interprofessional healthcare team, utilizing the nursing process.
Prioritizes care based on patient needs, abilities, and preferences, advocating for patients and families to identify and resolve clinical and ethical concerns.
Provides patient education based on learning needs, utilizing appropriate resources and planning for post-discharge care, while consistently evaluating patient comprehension and adapting teaching methods as necessary.
Drives improvement in department scores for patient satisfaction through accountability to service standards.
Quality and Safety Essential Functions
Follows care standards related to the nursing process as outlined in the Houston Methodist Professional Nursing Practice document.
Identifies areas for practice improvement using research-based evidence to achieve core measures and patient safety outcomes, supported by accurate documentation.
Modifies care for complex patients and coordinates care with the interprofessional team based on evaluations of patient conditions, ensuring accurate documentation.
Utilizes clinical judgment and an evidence-based analytical approach to improve quality and safety scores on the unit-based scorecard.
Finance Essential Functions
Demonstrates self-motivation to manage time effectively, document care promptly, minimize incidental overtime, and prioritize daily tasks. Provides input into unit resource utilization, including capital and operational budget needs.
Contributes to meeting departmental financial targets through efforts to decrease length of stay and optimize efficiency.
Growth and Innovation Essential Functions
Identifies and presents opportunities for innovation and improvement in patient care or unit operations using evidence-based practice literature. Proposes innovative solutions through performance improvement projects and shared governance activities.
Champions new care pathways or service line implementations to enhance community service, identifying trends for improvement opportunities and supporting initiatives.

Education
Bachelor of Science degree or higher from an accredited School of Nursing.
Work Experience
Two years of registered nursing experience in a healthcare setting.
Licenses and Certifications - Required
RN - Registered Nurse - Texas State Licensure and/or Compact State Licensure within 60 days OR
RN-Temp - Registered Nurse - Temporary State Licensure within 60 days AND
BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) AND
Other credentials and certifications as defined by unit/service line.
Licenses and Certifications - Preferred
Magnet - ANCC Recognized Certification in applicable specialty area.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to safely perform assigned duties, as determined through ongoing assessments and evaluations.
