Position Title: Medical Assistant

Reports To: Medical Office Manager

Status: Non-Exempt

Position Summary

With a focus on exceptional patient care, the Medical Assistant is responsible for delivering professional clinical support within the medical practice, as directed by the Physicians. This role also includes general responsibilities to assist in the daily operations of the office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Welcomes patients into the examination room, ensuring their comfort while accurately recording medical histories and vital signs.
  • Provides support to Physicians and Physician Assistants in the office.
  • Prepares surgical instrument trays as needed and retrieves diagnostic images for review.
  • Manages incoming calls for the Physicians, documenting clinical messages and responding to patient inquiries within established guidelines.
  • Conducts triage duties in accordance with practice protocols.
  • Prepares and reviews patient charts for upcoming visits.
  • Ensures cleanliness and proper setup of examination rooms prior to patient encounters.
  • Restocks and maintains examination rooms for daily use.
  • Confirms receipt of diagnostic test reports and ensures they are reviewed and filed appropriately.
  • Handles prescription requests from pharmacies and documents accurately in the medical records.
  • Maintains clinical equipment, ensuring proper sterilization and reporting any damage.
  • Records telephone communications accurately in the medical record.
  • Possesses adequate medical knowledge to perform essential functions, including patient education and assisting with examinations.
  • Performs additional clinical duties as required.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Ensure efficient turnover of examination rooms while maintaining cleanliness.
  • Address patient needs promptly.
  • Escort patients from the waiting area to examination rooms, verifying and updating their information in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Assist patients with necessary preparations, including removing dressings and providing gowns.
  • Ensure patient charts are complete and accessible for Physicians.
  • Notify Physicians of any patient allergies documented in charts.
  • Assist Physicians with various procedures, including injections and aspirations.
  • Monitor and replenish supply levels as necessary.
  • Instruct patients on post-visit care, including the use of medical equipment.
  • Apply knowledge of sterile techniques and safety regulations.
  • Photocopy patient information and maintain accurate records.

Potential Responsibilities

  • Assisting with various procedures, including phlebotomy and injections.
  • Conducting COVID-19 testing as required.
  • Managing patient prescription histories through appropriate channels.

Shared Duties

  • Maintain confidentiality of patient information in compliance with company policies and regulations.
  • Participate in continuing education and staff meetings as required.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor in all interactions.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Physicians or management.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; further education preferred.
  • Minimum of two years' experience in a medical office setting.
  • Knowledge of HIPAA and OSHA regulations.
  • Familiarity with medical practice management systems and electronic medical records.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
  • Demonstrated commitment to confidentiality and high standards of customer service.
