Position Summary

The Gallery Coordinator plays a pivotal role within the gallery team, directly reporting to the Gallery Operations Coordinator. This position encompasses various responsibilities related to the retail sales gallery, including sales, customer engagement, eCommerce, FOCUS exhibitions, and artist development.

In collaboration with the Gallery Operations Coordinator, the Gallery Coordinator will plan and implement special exhibitions in the FOCUS Gallery while also providing support for other gallery initiatives.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Engage with visitors and gallery patrons to provide information and facilitate purchases, orders, commissions, and inquiries regarding Penland-affiliated artists; collaborate with the gallery team to foster new customer relationships and ensure exceptional long-term service.
  • Assist the Gallery Operations Coordinator with inventory management and record-keeping tasks.
  • Oversee all aspects of art handling for the Lucy Morgan Gallery, including receiving, installation, de-installation, packing, shipping, and condition reporting.
  • Support the Visitor Center Gallery exhibitions as needed.
  • Work with the gallery team to establish new artist relationships, maintain long-term artist representation, and actively cultivate a diverse and inclusive artist roster.
  • Collaborate with the Gallery Operations Coordinator to plan and execute FOCUS Gallery exhibitions, serving as the primary contact for FOCUS artists, setting project schedules, and leading efforts in photography, webpage content, marketing, and social media.
  • Assist the John & Robyn Horn Gallery curator as required.
  • Contribute to the management of the eCommerce site, including photography and maintenance of the online shop.

Participate in shared administrative responsibilities, team meetings, budget development, training sessions, and other meetings as requested; perform additional duties as necessary.

Qualifications
  • 2-3 years of relevant experience in a retail gallery setting or a combination of applicable customer service and professional experience.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for welcoming artists, visitors, and patrons to Penland, fostering relationships with diverse groups with professionalism and respect.
  • Strong commitment to being a collaborative and effective member of the gallery team, with a proactive approach to responsibilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, along with strong planning, administrative, and organizational abilities.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects independently and collaboratively, with attention to detail and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite, Mac OS, Adobe Creative Suite, social media platforms, and DSLR photography; basic experience with WordPress and POS software is preferred.
  • Understanding of gallery and exhibition operations, with the ability to handle a range of craft media.
  • Ability to safely handle heavy and fragile objects, climb ladders, and use hand and small power tools.
  • A valid and active driver's license is required.
Physical Demands

This role requires regular sitting, computer work, and repetitive tasks. The employee must frequently use hands to handle objects and communicate effectively. Standing, walking, and bending are also required, along with the ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more. Specific vision requirements include close vision.

Compensation

This is a full-time, non-exempt position eligible for benefits. The salary range for this role is competitive and negotiable based on experience and skills.
