Job Summary

Powers Health is seeking a highly skilled Financial Counselor to join our team. As a Financial Counselor, you will play a critical role in ensuring that patients receive the financial support they need to access quality healthcare services.

Key Responsibilities
  • Handle person-to-person collections with in-house patients while maintaining positive public relations.
  • Monitor and evaluate in-house patients' financial history to ensure sufficient information to establish viable payment plans following department policy and procedures.
  • Review financial information to determine eligibility for the Affordable Care Act, Welfare or Charity Programs.
  • File necessary forms needed to obtain proper payment from Welfare/Public Aid.
  • Help contact insurance companies for verification of patient coverage and enter benefits as specified for each patient.
  • Gather all necessary data or documentation to make determination on third party payors.
  • Obtain insurance cards and signatures on required forms not obtained by admitting and scan information into the system.
  • Interact with Social Service, Utilization Review, Case Managers and Nursing Units involving patient financial concerns.
  • Notify U/R of pre-certification needed when insurance information is obtained for same day admits.
  • Keep supervisor updated of any problems that may delay completion of job duties.
  • May need to cover additional areas of the Financial Counselor Unit as needed.
Requirements
  • GED or High School Diploma required.
  • Strong experience in customer service required.
  • Previous experience in hospital/physician office setting preferred.
  • Previous financial counseling/collection experience preferred.
  • Certified Indiana Navigator training and certification preferred.
  • Ability to discuss financial matters with patients.
  • Knowledge of insurance benefits; experience with insurance benefit verification and/or pre-certification preferred.
  • Medical Terminology helpful and familiarity with CPT-4 and ICD-9 codes.
  • Knowledge of IN Medicaid programs desired.
  • Ability to speak and communicate in Spanish would be beneficial.
  • Strong written/verbal communication skills.
  • Basic level of proficiency with MS Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Must be proficient with a 10 key calculator, detail oriented with a good numeric aptitude and typing skills of 35 wpm with accuracy.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and multi-task while working in a collaborative, team environment with a positive attitude.
  • Must be able to work in a fast-paced environment and work under deadlines.
  • Must be flexible to float to other locations to fill vacancies.
