Position Overview:
The Marshall University Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine is in search of a distinguished, board-certified internal medicine physician to assume the role of Chair for the Department of Internal Medicine.
The Chair will be tasked with the development and management of innovative healthcare delivery models; ensuring excellence in clinical practice; fostering educational initiatives; coordinating research efforts, and encouraging scholarly activities within the department through grants, publications, and presentations.
Located in Huntington, West Virginia, the Joan C. Edwards School of Medicine collaborates with its clinical partner, Marshall Health, and its primary hospital affiliates at Marshall Health Network (MHN) to address the healthcare needs of West Virginia and its neighboring regions.This role presents an exceptional opportunity for candidates to lead the largest clinical department of the medical school while influencing the future of medical education and patient care, driving innovation, excellence, and collaboration within our vibrant academic community.

Key Responsibilities:

The Chair will build and lead cohesive teams, creating an environment conducive to program growth and success.The Chair will actively engage in the institution's senior leadership, participating in relevant committees.
Faculty and Staff Management:
The Chair serves as the administrator for all faculty and staff within the department.
The Chair will strategically guide department physicians, resident physicians, fellows, advanced care professionals, and other personnel to optimize patient care, support scholarly activities, and deliver effective educational programs.
The Chair will actively recruit and retain necessary subspecialties to ensure exemplary quality and service.The Chair will promote faculty and staff development, including mentoring and professional growth for junior faculty, providing clear direction and enabling faculty advancement.
Financial Oversight:
The Chair holds overall responsibility for establishing and maintaining the department's budget.
The Chair will collaborate in the staffing and budget processes for all components of clinical, research, and educational programs.
The Chair must effectively communicate the department's financial matters to executive leadership within the School of Medicine, guided by a philosophy of openness and transparency.
The Chair will manage institutional support for faculty and program development.The Chair will identify external funding opportunities to help achieve program objectives.
Clinical Excellence:
The Chair will enhance clinical programs within the department by establishing effective clinical services that surpass national standards for measured outcomes, thereby optimizing patient care.
The Chair will develop initiatives to continuously improve primary and subspecialty care for the Tri-State community and southern West Virginia.
The Chair will collaborate with senior administrative teams within the School of Medicine and partner hospitals on effective capital budgeting and strategic direction for acquiring innovative equipment, materials, and technology to maintain state-of-the-art services in the Department of Internal Medicine.
Quality Assurance:
The Chair will oversee quality assurance and improvement activities within the department, ensuring exemplary quality outcomes and compliance.
The Chair will stay informed and maintain compliance with all regulatory aspects of internal medicine programs.
Educational Oversight:
The Chair will supervise exemplary undergraduate and graduate medical education programs across the department, ensuring compliance with applicable accreditation standards, including but not limited to LCME and ACGME.
The Chair and division directors will provide both in-service and continuing education programs for hospital personnel and other local, regional, and national audiences in areas related to internal medicine and its subspecialties.
Research Leadership:
The Chair is expected to lead and engage in scholarly activities within the department.
The Chair will encourage and facilitate collaboration on research projects between the Department of Internal Medicine and other departments as necessary.
