Job Summary

The Pathologist Assistant plays a crucial role in supporting the Director of Division (Pathology) in the preparation and performance of gross surgical examinations. This position is responsible for processing surgical pathology specimens, including receipt, dissection, description, and examination of tissues. Additionally, the Pathologist Assistant is responsible for gross autopsy prosection and preliminary autopsy reports.

Key Responsibilities
  • Specimen Examination and Description: Examines tissue samples to assist the pathologist in diagnosing disease and provides a detailed description of the sample, determining if further analysis is needed or presenting to the pathologist for final diagnoses.
  • Prosection Assistance: Assists the pathologist in the performance of the pro-section, including external examination, in situ inspection, evisceration, dissection, recording of data, dictation of descriptive information, and any material relating to gross autopsy findings.
  • Tissue Procurement and Analysis: Assists the pathologist in procuring autopsy material for tumor banking and tissue procurement, as well as bio-analytic procedures such as microbiological cultures, blood and serum analysis, and chemical and toxicological testing.
  • Body Restoration and Notification: Ensures proper restoration of bodies, including notification of biological hazards such as contagious disease or radioactivity.
  • Quality Assurance and Reporting: Prepares quality assurance reports and workload reports.
  • Technical Direction and Training: Provides technical direction in autopsy techniques for groups viewing an autopsy and may train residents in the gross evaluation and dissection of surgical specimens and autopsy prosection.
  • Photography Coordination: Coordinates the support of photography services.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Experience: Must have one to two years of grossing experience in a teaching institution working with pathology residents.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledgeable with voice dictation software such as Voicebrook.
Education and Certifications
  • Education: A Master's degree from a NAACLS accredited Pathologist Assistant program.
  • Licenses and Certifications: NYS License required; Certification through ASCP or AAPA preferred.
