Job Summary

The City of Johnson City is seeking a skilled Water Utility Field Technician to join our team. As a key member of our Water & Sewer department, you will be responsible for accurately reading and recording water consumption of utility customers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Read water meters on assigned routes and record readings;
  • Conduct inspections to ensure meters are functioning properly and report any defects to a superior;
  • Connect and disconnect meters, transfer water service;
  • Work with the cut-off list;
  • Conduct meter checks and re-reads;
  • Participate in the installation of meters;
  • Substitute as Utility Service Worker during emergency conditions;
  • Walk for extended periods to read water meters;
  • Observe safety policies and requirements;
  • Assist customers by responding to inquiries;
  • Perform related tasks as required.

Requirements:

  • General working knowledge of the geography and street location of the City;
  • Ability to write legibly;
  • Ability to make simple arithmetical calculations rapidly and accurately;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public;
  • Good health and physical condition to permit walking all day under varying climatic conditions.

Acceptable Experience and Training:

  • Completion of high school or GED and some experience in work providing familiarity with a water utility or equivalent;
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

  • Drug screening;
  • Background check.
