Position Overview

The Radiation Therapist is responsible for administering ionizing radiation to patients across all age groups, adhering to the directives provided by the Radiation Oncologist and under the supervision of the Chief Therapist.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer the prescribed radiation therapy regimen with minimal oversight.
  • Verify the treatment prescription, patient identification, and medical records.
  • Communicate the treatment process to patients, ensuring they understand the procedure and emergency protocols.
  • Prepare the treatment area and equipment according to the specifications outlined in the prescription.
  • Safely transfer patients to the treatment couch, taking care with any medical devices in use.
  • Monitor treatment duration and deliver the specified radiation dose accurately.
  • Maintain communication with patients throughout the treatment session.
  • Document and observe patient reactions, reporting any unusual occurrences to the nursing staff or Radiation Oncologist.
  • Adhere to safety protocols for radiation exposure for both patients and staff.
  • Assist in simulation and tumor localization processes, as well as dosimetry procedures.
  • Conduct weekly port film acquisitions for review by the Radiation Oncology team.
  • Participate in on-call duties as required.
  • Perform quality assurance checks and maintain accurate treatment records.
  • Assist in the onboarding and training of new staff members.
  • Engage in departmental performance improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

Education: Completion of a 24-month program in radiology technology and a 12-month program in radiation therapy technology, or equivalent educational background.

Experience: Minimum of one year of clinical training in Radiation Therapy.

Licensure and Certification: Current licensure as mandated by state or national authorities, and/or certification in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Continuous education to maintain ARRT certification is required.

Skills and Knowledge: Proficient understanding of radiation therapy equipment and procedures, human anatomy, and patient positioning techniques. Ability to perform CPR in emergencies is essential.
