Key Responsibilities
  • Patrol campus buildings and grounds to prevent or respond to incidents of theft, vandalism, fire, or other safety hazards.
  • Check IDs of visitors and escort individuals off campus as needed.
  • Ensure buildings are locked and unlocked as required, and check the physical plant at night.
  • Respond to complaints and calls related to possible criminal activity, investigate incidents, and apprehend individuals as necessary.
  • Investigate traffic accidents on campus and respond to medical emergencies.
  • Report security incidents and unusual or hazardous conditions to appropriate officials.
  • Assist local fire and rescue personnel as needed, and provide security services for special events.
  • Issue keys to buildings and rooms, and assist with problems related to keys, locks, and doors.
  • Provide directions and general campus information to visitors.
  • Supervise student workers and assist with training and oversight of new Public Safety Officers.
  • Prepare required paperwork on security activities.
  • Participate in trainings on restorative justice, de-escalation, and trauma response.
Requirements
  • High school education plus two to three years of relevant work experience, including one year of directly-related security or law enforcement training or experience.
  • A valid Vermont driver's license is required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Good working knowledge of relevant laws and regulations.
  • Knowledge of fire prevention and firefighting methods.
  • Relevant first aid training and knowledge of CPR.
  • Understanding of the educational goals and objectives of Vermont State University.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse community and promote diverse perspectives and cultures.
