Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Medical Assistant Certified to join our team at 3500 Roper St. Francis Healthcare. As a clinical professional, you will play a vital role in providing indirect and direct patient care, working closely with our healthcare providers to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Contribute to the completion of patient chief complaints, including vital signs, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, height, weight, and temperature.
  • Document patient/family needs and participate in planning and implementing care for patients.
  • Administer ordered medications within the Medical Assisting scope and state guidelines.
  • Identify significant changes in patient condition and report them to the provider.
  • Troubleshoot issues and escalate problems to the provider, direct supervisor, or appropriate internal resource.
  • Maintain clinical and administrative skills per departmental competency guidelines to meet patient care and daily operational needs.
  • Show patients to examination rooms and prepare them for the physician.
  • Travel to other facilities for providers or adjust hours to meet patient care needs as directed by the practice manager.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment by keeping the work area, exam rooms, and equipment in clean, orderly, and safe manner.
  • Assist patient and provider with virtual health visits, including setting up the visit, pre-charting, contacting the patient, and troubleshooting issues.
  • Document in electronic medical records accurately and appropriately.
  • Manage in-basket messages in the electronic health record under the provider's verbatim instructions.
  • Perform front desk workflows, including My Chart requests, patient registration, scheduling, phone triage, cash handling, and check-in/check-out.
  • Follow up on orders, appointments, referrals, and follow-up visits, and collect co-pays as needed.
Requirements
  • Active Medical Assisting certification from one of the following: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), or Assessment-Based Recognition in Order Entry (ABR-OE).
  • BLS Basic Life Support administered by the American Heart Association.
  • High School/GED.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant post-secondary education (preferred, but required in South Carolina).
  • 1 year of recent Medical Assisting experience (preferred).
Working Conditions

This role requires working in a fast-paced clinical environment with periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads. You will be exposed to general office environments, high noise levels, bright lights, and potential physical altercations and verbal abuse. You may also be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids, human blood, and other potentially infectious materials.

Physical Requirements

This role requires manual dexterity, hearing, and visual acuity. You will be required to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds. You will also be required to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.

Skills
  • Record patients' medical history, vital statistics, or information such as test results in medical records.
  • Interview patients to obtain medical information and measure their vital signs, weight, and height.
  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician.
  • Collect blood, tissue, or other laboratory specimens, log the specimens, and prepare them for testing.
  • Provide authorized prescription and drug refill information for pharmacies as directed by provider.
  • Explain treatment procedures, medications, diets, or physicians' instructions to patients.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments and dispose of contaminated supplies.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and sample analyses.
  • Perform general office duties, such as answering telephones, taking dictation, or completing insurance forms.
