Position Overview:

The New York State Education Department's Office of Education Policy is looking for candidates for the role of Practical Nursing Substitute within the New York State School for the Blind.

The selected individual will be accountable for providing healthcare services to students during the absence of regular nursing staff.

Key Responsibilities:

The duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting clinic rounds and administering medications in a timely manner;
  • Evaluating health programs for service delivery, while accurately observing and documenting symptoms of illness;
  • Addressing health issues according to established protocols;
  • Maintaining comprehensive health records and reports for each student;
  • Engaging effectively with students, direct care staff, parents, and other health agencies, demonstrating tact and professionalism in line with school policies.
Employment Conditions:

This role is temporary and on an as-needed basis. Changes in negotiating units may affect salary, insurance, and other benefits.

Applicants must undergo fingerprinting and background checks as part of the hiring process, with associated costs borne by the applicant.

To qualify, candidates must possess a valid license and current registration to practice as a practical nurse in New York State, or hold a limited permit, or have an application submitted for a limited permit at the time of hire.

Continued employment is contingent upon maintaining the necessary licensure and registration.

Substitutes will be contacted via phone when their services are required, with efforts made to provide at least 24 hours' notice.
