Environmental Easement Supervisor

The Hudson Highlands Land Trust, Inc. (HHLT) is in search of a dedicated and self-sufficient Conservation Easement Manager to oversee our conservation easements. This role encompasses tasks such as annual monitoring of conservation easements, evaluation of landowner inquiries, and addressing field-related concerns including potential infractions. All activities will adhere to the Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices along with HHLT's established policies.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
We are seeking an individual who is passionate about environmental conservation and is eager to acquire the necessary skills to manage our conservation easement portfolio while also contributing to new project acquisitions. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training and support to develop in this role.
As the Conservation Easement Manager becomes more experienced, they will take on the following responsibilities:
Management of Conservation Easements
- Establish and nurture relationships with landowners of conserved lands.
- Conduct annual visits to monitor HHLT's conservation easement portfolio, utilizing both in-person assessments and remote imagery analysis.
- Address inquiries from landowners and facilitate the activation of rights reserved in the conservation easement.
- Maintain accurate stewardship records in various formats and manage stewardship-related administrative duties, including documentation and filing of all baseline reports, current condition assessments, and easement correspondence.
- Collaborate with the Director of Conservation on any suspected or confirmed conservation easement violations.
- Prepare current condition reports for conservation easements.
- Ensure that HHLT's stewardship and defense practices for conservation easements meet or exceed the Land Trust Alliance Standards & Practices.
Project Acquisitions
- When necessary, compile reports detailing the conditions of new easement properties, which includes site visits, digital photography, GIS mapping, and report writing.
- Submit executed conservation easements and amendments to the relevant state department.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
- Learn and apply Geographic Information Services (GIS) technology if not already familiar.
- Create maps for monitoring reports and for use in the field and office.
- Collaborate with the Preserve & Natural Resources Manager to develop maps for meetings, publications, public policy initiatives, grant applications, and HHLT events.
Additional Duties
- Assist the Preserve & Natural Resources Manager with issues related to fee-owned properties, such as encroachments and responses to natural disasters.
- Implement innovative technologies relevant to our work.
- Collect data, prepare maps and memos, and support the preparation of project review materials.
- Work with team members to assist with outreach, development, and communication on conservation topics, which may include educational presentations and materials preparation.
- This position reports directly to the Director of Conservation.

QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated strong interest and commitment to land and natural resource conservation.
- A blend of practical experience and transferable skills; or a bachelor's degree in environmental studies, environmental science, forestry, conservation, ecology, biology, or a related field. Field and career change candidates are encouraged to apply.
- Experience engaging with diverse communities.
- Willingness to collaborate within a team environment that values shared decision-making.
- Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently with meticulous attention to detail.
- Strong organizational skills, including planning, documentation, and note-taking.
- Valid driver's license, with the expectation of frequent travel to various sites. (Mileage reimbursement for personal vehicle use will be provided).
- Physical capability to lift 30 pounds and hike over 5 miles on challenging terrain in varying weather conditions.
- Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
DESIRABLE ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
· One to two years of relevant work, internship, volunteer, or coursework experience is preferred.
· Familiarity with ArcGIS software and GPS data collection is advantageous. A proactive interest in learning new technologies is a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This full-time, exempt position reports to the Director of Conservation and collaborates closely with the Preserve & Natural Resources Manager. A competitive salary, commensurate with experience, will be offered along with a comprehensive benefits package.
