The Role
Black Lotus Labs is seeking a Senior Lead Security Engineer to utilize Lumen's unparalleled visibility to track Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors and enhance the identification of emerging malicious threats. Our extensive global visibility across one of the world's largest and most interconnected IP backbones, combined with our computing capabilities, presents unique opportunities to integrate machine learning and graph analytic techniques in our threat-hunting endeavors.

This position will collaborate with seasoned security researchers, data engineers, malware reverse engineers, and data scientists to address evolving threats driven by technologies such as our Hadoop ecosystem (HBase, HDFS, Spark, Kafka, AirFlow), Elasticsearch, Redis clusters, Docker, and a network of honeypots. This role is remote/work-from-home with occasional in-person collaboration.

Main Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with the team to enhance the analysis of evolving threats and monitor threat actors, utilizing data science tools developed by our lab.
  • Work alongside APT analysts to conduct trend analysis on tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) to identify patterns within our data.
  • Investigate and analyze threat actor activities online using Black Lotus Labs data to create analytical models for detecting malicious or anomalous events in large datasets.
  • Develop data analytics to improve cluster efficiencies and enhance our capabilities in tracking malicious cyber actors (MCAs).
  • Create and implement automated workflows to identify and analyze trends within our data holdings.

Candidate Profile
Ideal candidates will possess a robust background demonstrating:
  • Proficiency in analyzing large datasets and deriving conclusions.
  • Experience with scripting in Python and familiarity with distributed computing.
  • Strong analytical skills and adaptability to new methods, tools, and programming languages.
  • Experience in data extraction using SQL.
  • User-level proficiency in a Unix-based environment.
  • Excellent writing skills for public knowledge sharing.
  • Knowledge in areas such as PySpark, Pandas, SQL, data visualization, and graph analytics.

Preferred Qualifications
Well-qualified candidates may also have:
  • Experience with OSINT methods for investigations, including identifying signatures for data hunting.
  • Experience in developing automation and analysis within Python environments.

The starting salary for this position varies based on the employee's primary work location, with specific ranges outlined for different states. Compensation is determined by individual qualifications.
