Job Summary

The Certified Surgical Technician is a vital member of the surgical team, responsible for providing assistance to the surgeon during the operating phase. This role requires a high level of skill, attention to detail, and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and set up for surgical cases, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
  • Open packs, trays, instruments, and sterile supplies, maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Count and verify the number of sponges, needles, and instruments used during procedures, adhering to policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Break down and clean OR rooms after each procedure, ensuring a safe and clean environment for future surgeries.
  • Check and maintain supplies at the end of scheduled cases, ensuring adequate stock levels.
  • Update surgeon preference cards, ensuring accurate and up-to-date information.
  • Scrub and assist the physician during operations, providing support and maintaining a sterile environment.
  • Assist nursing staff as needed, providing additional support during procedures.
  • Assist with cleaning, packaging, and sterilization of instruments and equipment, ensuring proper maintenance and storage.
  • Advise the supervisor of equipment repair needs, ensuring timely maintenance and replacement.
  • Complete annual competencies for specific working areas, demonstrating ongoing skill and knowledge development.
  • Comply with Springfield Clinic's incident reporting policy and procedures, ensuring accurate and timely reporting.
  • Adhere to all OSHA and Springfield Clinic training and accomplishments, demonstrating a commitment to safety and quality.
  • Provide excellent customer service, adhering to Springfield Clinic's Code of Conduct and Ethics Standards.
  • Perform other job duties as assigned, demonstrating flexibility and adaptability.
Requirements
  • Graduate from an OR technician program or equivalent training.
  • Previous experience as an OR technician, two years preferred.
  • CST Certification in the State of Illinois.
  • CPR certification per American Heart Association guidelines, required within 30 days of hire.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Occasional heavy lifting required.
  • Manual dexterity to handle equipment and appliances.
  • Good physical health.
  • Ability to control emotions and maintain composure under stress, using tact and good judgment.
  • Capable of pushing, pulling, stooping, bending, and lifting.
  • Ability to stand and/or walk for long periods.
  • Ability to adjust to various personalities and situations.
  • Appearance well groomed.
  • Maintain professional behavior.
  • Exposure to blood and body fluids, tissue, and contagious diseases, and/or potentially hazardous materials.
