ROLE: CHIEF OF SPECIAL EDUCATION OPERATIONS

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Valid Michigan Teacher Certification with endorsement in Special Education.
  1. Preferred: Michigan Administrator Certification with prior administrative experience.
  2. Preferred: State of Michigan qualification for approval as a Special Education Director.
  3. Minimum of three years of successful classroom teaching experience.
  4. Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with a strong ability to collaborate effectively.
  5. Other qualifications as deemed appropriate by the board.

REPORTS TO: Superintendent

SUPERVISES: In collaboration with building administrators, all special education professional and support staff.

JOB GOAL: To oversee and enhance special education services within the district, ensuring a robust educational framework for students with special needs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Design and implement programs and services that comply with state and federal regulations, tailored to the needs of special education students.
  2. Assist in modifying school policies to address special education requirements and advocate for essential programs for exceptional children.
  3. Ensure accurate submission of all necessary documentation to relevant educational authorities, including monitoring compliance.
  4. Stay updated on all legal obligations related to special education.
  5. Provide leadership in the initiation of new programs and the assessment of existing ones, recommending necessary adjustments.
  6. Establish and manage procedures for the evaluation, placement, and reassessment of students within the special education framework.
  7. Oversee and evaluate special education staff performance.
  8. Develop protocols for referrals, medical assessments, psychological evaluations, and the placement of students with special needs.
  9. Assist in the recruitment and selection of special education personnel.
  10. Coordinate with transportation services to arrange necessary transportation for students requiring special accommodations.
  11. Formulate budget proposals and manage the financial aspects of special education.
  12. Communicate the objectives and programs of special education services to the Board, administration, staff, and the community.
  13. Contribute to the creation of professional development programs for special education staff.
  14. Approve all materials and resources utilized by special education personnel.
  15. Regularly assess special education programs, curricula, and individual student needs.
  16. Engage with parents of students enrolled in special education programs.
  17. Commit to personal professional development, staying informed about current research and best practices, and participating in relevant professional gatherings.
  18. Assist in the formulation of Section 504 plans.
  19. Perform additional duties as assigned.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and work year to be determined by the Administrative Contract.

EVALUATION: Job performance will be assessed in accordance with the Board's evaluation policies for administrative personnel.
