About the Role:

This exciting opportunity is available for a highly skilled Civil Engineer Trainee/Assistant Civil Engineer to join our team at the New York State Department of Transportation. As an Engineer Trainee, you will serve a 24-month traineeship that leads to Assistant Engineer, Grade 20.

Job Description:

The successful candidate will be responsible for reviewing contractor submissions and shop drawings, reviewing design estimates, plans and specifications, and performing or assisting MURK reviews. Additionally, they will ensure work performed by contractors meets contract specifications, engineering standards, and is performed safely.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reviewing and processing consultant estimates
  • Reviewing and processing subcontractor approvals
  • Performing or assisting MURK reviews
  • Reviewing contract change orders
  • Functioning as an Engineer-In-Charge (Assistant Engineer or AE), inspector or office engineer
  • Ensuring work performed by contractors meets contract specifications, engineering standards, and is performed safely
  • Reviewing consultant and contractor estimates, plans and submissions
  • Completing daily work reports, preparing change orders, final documents, and record plans
  • Testing or inspecting various materials incorporated into our construction projects
  • Conducting field inspections for traffic case investigations and final acceptance
  • Investigating & preparing Accident Damage Recovery (ADR) estimates
  • Purchasing traffic signal equipment when needed
  • Reviewing and verifying all transactions on purchase account
  • Coordinating with Permit group and Main office to update and manage information related to permit signals

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering or engineering technology
  • Proof of passing the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE)
  • One year of full-time qualifying engineering experience
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office and other

Salary: The estimated salary for this position is $71,469 per year, based on the New York State salary scale for Engineer Trainees. This amount may vary depending on your location and level of experience.
