Position Overview

As a Senior Underwriter in casualty insurance, you will cultivate, expand, and sustain a substantial, intricate, and diversified portfolio of business while collaborating closely with brokers and clients to evaluate risks, establish premiums, set conditions, and negotiate agreements that enhance profitability and align with business objectives.

The Senior Underwriter, Major Accounts Risk Management is tasked with developing, expanding, and maintaining a profitable and diversified portfolio of loss-sensitive primary casualty business, concentrating on Workers Compensation, General Liability, and Commercial Auto. This is achieved through effective marketing, sound underwriting decisions, fostering mutually beneficial relationships with agents/brokers, and utilizing underwriting tools, systems, and expert resources. You will also guide and mentor less experienced underwriters in your area of expertise, providing regular coaching and feedback to management regarding employee progress.

This role is hybrid, requiring some in-office presence based on location.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversees a portfolio of brokers/agents and clients, leveraging market expertise to develop and underwrite profitable business, representing Liberty Mutual.
  • Maintains relationships with senior brokers and key agents.
  • Establishes a strong market presence, including ongoing relationships with agents and brokers.
  • Aims to enhance existing relationships and cultivate new ones.
  • Communicates key coverage distinctions with a high level of detail.
  • Contributes significantly to business and marketing strategies, providing advanced data-driven insights from portfolio analysis.
  • Participates in cross-departmental projects aimed at driving underwriting and process excellence.
  • Models effective collaboration across teams, stakeholders, and partners.
  • Possesses strong knowledge of key legal cases, legislation, and regulations affecting underwriting expertise.
  • Shares knowledge based on technical expertise, including providing external thought leadership.
  • Mentors, coaches, and trains other underwriters and internal partners.
Qualifications
  • A degree in Business or a related field is typically required.
  • A minimum of 7 years of progressive underwriting experience, typically 10 years or more, is expected.
  • CPCU or a professional insurance designation is preferred.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to assess and evaluate underwriting risks.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex analyses and information clearly to others in the organization for underwriting or training purposes.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills when engaging with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Comprehension of complex technical underwriting issues and the ability to define and implement necessary processes/workflows.
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business.
