Cost Estimators will leverage their expertise and departmental systems to collaborate as part of a project team to generate estimates, budgets, proposals, and other necessary documentation as required by the organization. The responsibilities of Cost Estimators include:
- Analyzing project documentation and coordinating with the project team to deliver a comprehensive scope of work.
- Conducting takeoffs, quantity surveys, and pricing of project components.
- Assessing construction methodologies and communicating potential risks to operations.
- Reviewing the work of estimating interns assigned to the project, ensuring accuracy, thoroughness, and timely completion of tasks.
- Participating in project briefings and debriefings.
- Additional responsibilities include updating subcontractors and suppliers in the company solicitation software, assisting in maintaining the department's unit price database, historical cost database, and other systems.
- Progressing towards lead estimator status and coordinating project efforts.
Key Responsibilities
- Major Projects Estimate Leadership / Quantity Takeoff: Oversee and lead aspects of the competitive bidding process for projects, including intricate quantity takeoffs for self-performed scopes of work and a thorough understanding of labor productivity. Collaborate with the preconstruction department to assist in preparing conceptual budgets, milestone budgets, and the competitive bidding process for construction management and alternative delivery projects. Prepare and assess subcontractor and supplier scopes of work. Additionally, work closely with the operations team to identify potential risks prior to bid submission.
- Team Collaboration: In addition to working with estimating project teams, cost estimators will collaborate with executive team members from various office locations to develop project estimates or budgets. Building and maintaining relationships with clients, design firms, subcontractors, and suppliers will be expected in this role.
- Training and Development: Cost estimators will utilize senior estimators for guidance and support. They will also mentor and provide direction to junior employees and interns as they navigate the estimating process.
- Innovation & Technology: Assist in maintaining estimating department systems such as material and equipment cost resources, historical project data, and building square foot cost databases.
- Individuals should possess strong mathematical and computer skills, with proficiency in all MS Office products (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint).
- Experience is essential.
- A 4-year degree is preferred, ideally in Construction Management, Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
- Strong organizational skills, effective time management, professionalism, and the ability to collaborate well with others. A sense of selflessness, humility, and an enterprise-first mentality, along with emotional and social intelligence, are crucial.
