Job SummaryAs an Ultrasound Technologist at Excela Health, you will play a critical role in assisting physicians in the diagnosis of disease or malfunction of organs using two-dimensional images produced by ultrasound equipment. Your expertise will be essential in performing reflux studies, pulse volume recording, segmental pressures, and vein mapping.
Key Responsibilities- Collect and document pertinent data about patients and procedures.
- Reconfirm patient identification and verify physician orders.
- Ensure proper screening protocols are completed.
- Provide information to patients about procedures and answer any questions they may have.
- Verify patient consent and provide accurate explanations and instructions at an appropriate time and level.
- Analyze information obtained during the assessment phase to determine optimal imaging parameters per diagnosis.
- Determine whether patients have been appropriately prepared for procedures.
- Assess factors that may contraindicate procedures, such as medications and insufficient patient preparation.
- Select appropriate ultrasound equipment and scanning techniques based on patient age, size, and exam objectives.
- Obtain optimum images during scans and adjust as needed to better visualize anatomy or pathology.
- Send images to PACS for interpretation by radiologists.
- Take action based on patient and procedural variances.
- Notify healthcare providers when immediate clinical response is necessary based on findings and patient condition.
- Initiate additional scanning techniques for further investigation of areas of interest.
- Collect and document additional images and patient data as needed.
- Provide interpreting physicians with a summary of findings according to hospital protocol.
- Stay up-to-date with changes in vascular imaging to improve patient care.
- Document patient care, exam, and patient history in appropriate records.
- Verify correct orders are entered into RIS.
- Document patient history into PACS systems.
- Document any exceptions from established guidelines.
- Complete medication reconciliation documentation according to department guidelines.
- Facilitate correspondence with departments to ensure procedures are done in a timely manner.
- Work with centralized scheduling, nursing units, and ER to accommodate STAT or ASAP orders.
- Respond to emergency calls per department procedures.
- Maintain equipment and workstations in optimum condition.
- Perform daily QC on equipment.
- Ensure adequate patient care and office supplies are maintained.
- Report equipment malfunctions to service providers.
- Implement downtime procedures when necessary.
- Coordinate rescheduling of patients during equipment downtime.
- Initiate established downtime procedures during HIS/RIS and PACS downtime.
- Assist in developing necessary forms, procedures, and protocols.
- Confer with healthcare providers to determine proper imaging protocols.
- Confer with department managers to determine proper procedures and guidelines.
- Develop and implement new forms as needed for operations.
- Ensure the safety of patients and visitors.
- Oversee daily QC/preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Maintain records on equipment calibration/service.
- Report necessary equipment malfunctions to service providers.
- Maintain department statistics and records.
- Assist with all inspections.
- Ensure proper coding is provided for billing purposes.
- Attend department meetings and review minutes as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Completion of CAAHEP-accredited Medical Ultrasound Program.
- Minimum 2 years' experience in a vascular setting.
- Medical Terminology.
- Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, and sound judgment.
- Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
- Experience with lab accreditation.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) approved curriculum of the American Heart Association (CPR and AED) program.
- Act 33 with renewal.
- Act 34 with renewal.
- Act 73 FBI Clearance.
- Current registry with the American Registry Diagnostic Medical Sonographers/RVT (ARDMS) and/or RVS (ARRT).
This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities, but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
