More Than Just a Position, It's a Career

As the Lead Tax Strategist for U.S. Research & Development ("R&D"), you will provide expert guidance and insights into Caterpillar's U.S. Federal and State R&D tax credits and Section 174 expenses. This role oversees compliance processes, ensuring accurate computations, managing quarterly estimates and provisions, and making critical decisions to uphold the R&D tax credit during audits. You will regularly engage with business partners to offer advice on projects and pinpoint opportunities and risks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Driving the enhancement of U.S. R&D processes through technology utilization, advanced analytics, and insightful reporting.
  • Conducting thorough reviews of U.S. Federal and State R&D credit computations and Section 174 expenses, leveraging technical expertise and understanding complex data.
  • Monitoring and assessing the implications of proposed legislation and judicial decisions by applying Caterpillar's specific context.
  • Leading the U.S. Tax Reporting & Analysis team in addressing government inquiries, evaluating impacts, and guiding resolutions with a focus on enterprise-wide implications.
  • Collaborating proactively with business partners to ensure comprehensive data collection and analysis.
  • Overseeing team deadlines throughout the tax calendar and lifecycle while fostering staff development opportunities.

Qualifications:

  • Education/Experience: A Bachelor's Degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is typically required, along with 6+ years of progressively responsible tax-related experience.
  • Tax Expertise: Proficient knowledge of U.S. research & development credits, with the capability to advise, formulate policies, and oversee tax reporting requirements and legal precedents.
  • Results Orientation: Focuses time, resources, and actions on key priorities, understanding the importance of achieving objectives.
  • Influence through Knowledge: Identifies organizational gaps and proposes effective solutions; shares expertise on critical matters.
  • Analytical Problem Solving: Applies problem-solving skills to diverse situations; synthesizes information and develops alternative strategies.

Preferred Attributes:

  • Technical proficiency in Section 41 tax credits for large corporations with diverse business components.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team, manage multiple projects, and prioritize effectively.
  • Exhibits high initiative, sound judgment, and exceptional communication skills.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented mindset with the ability to cultivate relationships across the organization.
  • Solid understanding of accounting and business processes.
  • Familiarity with M365 and PowerBI.

  • Travel expectations are minimal, around 5-10%.
