Industrial Maintenance Technician - Southern Company

Position Summary

This role involves executing mechanical upkeep tasks on electric generation units and associated plant systems to guarantee safe and dependable functionality. Maintenance duties encompass preventive maintenance, predictive maintenance, and both planned and unplanned corrective actions on components related to safety and non-safety. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the upkeep and/or repair of power generation equipment; strategizing work and adhering to protocols/diagrams for the installation and maintenance of machinery; conducting assembly and disassembly of parts utilizing appropriate rigging and lifting methods; diagnosing equipment issues; liaising with plant management, operational staff, and maintenance teams; and being available for emergency calls outside of standard working hours, including weekends and adverse weather conditions, to support plant operations. Additionally, the technician will maintain maintenance logs in the Maximo computerized work order system and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and permits. The incumbents are expected to prioritize safety in all tasks and ensure the safety of themselves and their colleagues.

Additional Responsibilities

May be required to assist with mechanical maintenance at other Southern Company facilities.

Educational Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma - preferred
  • Two-year Technical degree in mechanical discipline or equivalent training - preferred
Experience Requirements:
  • Minimum of two years' experience as a Journeyman Mechanic or similar role
Technical Skills:
  • Experience in repairing pumps, valves, gearboxes, etc.
  • Preferred experience in welding (Stick, MIG, TIG)
  • Proficient in using an oxygen/acetylene torch
  • Familiarity with precision measurement instruments
  • Experience in aligning pumps and motors
  • Ability to rig and lift heavy machinery
  • Capability to interpret plant system and equipment schematics
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and apply technical manuals
  • Proficient in using power and hand tools
  • Intermediate computer skills (Microsoft Office applications, Maximo is a plus)
  • Preferred skills in operating lathes, end mills, etc.
  • Expertise in diagnosing defects and failures of specialized equipment
  • Ability to identify problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • Preferred experience in disassembling and reassembling combustion turbine units
Other Requirements:
  • Successful completion of pre-employment assessments including aptitude tests, mechanical knowledge tests, performance skills tests, and physical ability tests is required to advance in the selection process.
Physical Demands:
  • Ability to perform physically demanding tasks (e.g., walking, climbing ladders, lifting heavy equipment) while ensuring safety in various weather conditions.
