Job Summary

UPMC Hamot is seeking a part-time Nursing Assistant to join our team on 6 South CT Surgery. This 43-bed Medical/Surgical unit is dedicated to providing high-quality patient care, and we invite you to explore this opportunity.

Responsibilities
  • Provide direct patient care as directed by the RN, including activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, ambulating).
  • Maintain a safe and clean environment, including safety checks, cleaning rooms and equipment, changing linens, emptying linen hampers, and clearing hallways.
  • Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment, including messenger functions, ordering, charging/crediting supplies, setting up patient care equipment, and stocking rooms.
  • Deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers, and distribute mail.
  • Perform UPMC nursing core responsibilities: blood glucose, weights, vital signs, I&O, specimen collections, Foley care, and restraint application/removal.
  • Provide feedback to the RN and report changes in patient status.
  • Receive and act on feedback and direction constructively.
  • Identify learning needs and take action to improve knowledge, skills, and performance.
  • Communicate effectively with the healthcare team.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cultural diversity and support safety in the workplace.
  • Develop and maintain productive working relationships. Suggest and support changes within the department.
  • Assume responsibility for assignments and view problems as challenges.
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department. Establish effective communication strategies and maintain professional interpersonal relationships.
  • Contribute to unit activities, including responding to call lights, passing meal trays, and transporting patients.
  • Provide diversional activities to reduce or prevent the use of restraints. Document in the medical record according to procedures and complete clerical tasks as needed.
  • Comply with safety policies, including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure protocols.
  • Strictly adhere to all patient care and hospital information policies. Respond to emergent situations within the scope of the nursing assistant role.
  • Provide one-on-one companionship or supervision for patients as required.
  • Perform duties in accordance with system-wide competencies/behaviors. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of UPMC nursing assistant or EIC training program.
  • Knowledge of body mechanics and transfer techniques.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) preferred.
  • Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
  • Act 34.
