Role Summary
The Practical Nursing Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering quality care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This position encompasses a variety of responsibilities aimed at ensuring the well-being of clients within a mental health framework.
Key Responsibilities:
- Possess a comprehensive understanding of local healthcare facilities, services, and professionals.
- Respond to urgent calls from clients, providing crisis intervention and referrals as necessary.
- Maintain accurate medication records and perform inventory checks.
- Administer prescribed medications, including injections, in compliance with established nursing protocols and regulations.
- Monitor vital signs such as temperature, pulse, and blood pressure to assess client health and detect any adverse reactions.
- Collect laboratory samples using sterile techniques as directed by healthcare providers.
- Offer guidance to team members regarding medical concerns and medication management under the RN's supervision.
- Assist healthcare providers in evaluating both physical and mental health issues, utilizing in-person and telehealth services.
- Stay updated on best practices in psychopharmacology and detoxification methods.
- Oversee clients admitted to the crisis center, ensuring their care needs are met effectively.
- Assess and determine the level of care required for each client upon admission.
- Ensure the quality of care through regular review of clinical documentation.
- Observe and report client symptoms, escalating concerns to the provider when necessary.
- Utilize effective verbal intervention techniques during crisis situations.
- Administer treatments and medications as per provider instructions.
- Conduct audits of documentation to ensure compliance with required standards.
- Support providers during daily assessments.
- Order necessary medications for the unit as needed.
- Maintain certifications in crisis intervention, CPR, and First Aid.
- Manage crisis hotline services and document calls appropriately.
- Collaborate as a member of the interdisciplinary team:
- Communicate effectively with the healthcare provider to coordinate client care.
- Engage in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss client progress.
- Interpret policies and procedures to ensure adherence to established standards of care.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are essential for this role.
- Willingness to travel as required for job-related duties.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by supervisors or management.
- Participate actively in team meetings and training sessions.
- Meet performance expectations during evaluations to maintain job competency.
- Quality of work will be assessed through ongoing training and skill development.
- Completion of an accredited practical nursing program or equivalent certification in the state.
- Demonstrated competencies in managing clients with co-occurring disorders.
- In-depth knowledge of nursing principles, practices, and techniques.
- Proficiency in medication administration and client assessment.
- Understanding of crisis intervention strategies and behavioral health principles.
