The Nuclear Policy Analyst will engage in innovative strategies to enhance nuclear nonproliferation efforts by offering technical and policy insights to research and capacity-building initiatives within Argonne's Nuclear Technology and National Security Directorate (NTNS).

The chosen candidate will join the Nonproliferation Innovation Group in the Strategic Security Sciences (S3) Division, with the flexibility to contribute to projects related to nuclear security and the nonproliferation of nuclear and related technologies across various NTNS divisions, including Nuclear Science and Engineering, Chemical and Fuel Cycle Technologies, and Decision and Infrastructure Sciences.

This role will encompass the investigation of nuclear engineering technologies and the application of policies and methodologies pertinent to a variety of activities, such as:

  • Material accountability
  • International and domestic safeguards
  • Radiological and nuclear security
  • Radiation detection
  • Reactor modeling
  • Back-end fuel cycle processes, including waste management and reprocessing
  • Process monitoring
  • Advanced reactor designs
  • Nuclear economics
  • Proliferation resistance
  • Machine learning applications
  • Arms control initiatives

Utilizing their expertise and interests, the selected individual will collaborate with principal investigators and provide support for a diverse array of projects, with opportunities to advance in proposing and leading initiatives funded by the National Nuclear Security Administration, various Department of Energy offices, and other federal entities.

Position Requirements:

To be considered, candidates must possess:

  • Knowledge of U.S. and international nuclear policies, particularly in nuclear nonproliferation, nuclear security, nuclear energy development, nuclear fuel cycle management, nuclear safeguards, and nuclear export controls.
  • An applicable understanding of scientific and engineering principles related to the nuclear fuel cycle, radiological security, or other relevant technical fields such as nuclear engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, chemistry, and/or physics.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in written and verbal communication skills to effectively engage and collaborate with a diverse range of individuals and job functions.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, with meticulous attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple stakeholders and priorities, along with experience working independently under time constraints to meet critical deadlines.

The selected candidate will be assigned to the appropriate job profile of "Nuclear/Reactor Engineering" or "Social Science/Law" based on their background and qualifications.
