Postdoctoral Associate - Hydrologic and Nutrient Transport Modeling

Job No: 532672
Work Type: Post Doc Associate
Location: Not Specified
Categories: Biology/Life Science, Agricultural Sciences
Department: Not Specified

Job Overview

The Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences is dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment that embraces diversity across all aspects. We particularly encourage candidates who can enhance this environment through their research, teaching, mentorship, and professional contributions.

Position Summary:

The Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department, in collaboration with the Southwest Florida Research and Education Center, is seeking a postdoctoral associate specializing in hydrologic and nutrient transport modeling within the vadose zone. The selected candidate will develop and implement hydrologic models and contribute to the creation of a decision support system (DSS) aimed at multi-disciplinary projects focused on the development and assessment of water and nutrient best management practices (BMPs) across varying groundwater conditions.

The role involves gathering and analyzing soil, water, and plant data from various sites to create predictive models for subsurface water and nutrient transport in both well-drained and poorly-drained agricultural soils. This project adopts a systems approach, conducting experiments on high-value crops under diverse nutrient inputs, irrigation strategies, drainage, hydrology, and climatic conditions. The postdoctoral associate will collaborate with a team of researchers, students, and faculty to integrate predictions of water and nutrient loss with plant, soil, water, and economic data to formulate a DSS for effective nutrient and water management.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Analyze irrigation, soil, plant, hydrologic, topographic, and weather data.
2. Develop hydrologic models and integrate model predictions with empirical data.
3. Prepare reports, manuscripts, and grant proposals.
4. Present findings at conferences and stakeholder meetings.

Position Availability:

This position is available immediately with an initial appointment for one year, with the possibility of renewal based on funding and performance.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
Applicants must possess a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in agricultural, biological, civil, or environmental engineering, or related physical sciences. A strong background in hydrologic modeling and nutrient transport processes is essential. Candidates should demonstrate support for the mission of the Land-Grant system and a commitment to core values.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with subsurface hydrologic models (e.g., HYDRUS) is advantageous. A background in irrigation management and machine learning applications is a plus.

Application Instructions:

Interested individuals should submit their curriculum vitae and contact information for three references willing to provide letters of recommendation. Selected candidates will be required to present an official transcript upon hire. All degrees obtained from institutions outside the United States must be evaluated by an approved credentialing service.

Equal Employment Opportunity:

The University is committed to non-discrimination in all aspects of employment, including recruitment, hiring, promotions, and training. We encourage a diverse range of applicants to apply.
