Clinical Nutrition Specialist at Mount Sinai Health System
Under the guidance of the Director of Clinical Nutrition, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist is responsible for delivering high-quality nutritional care and education to patients and their families. This role involves assessing patients' nutritional status and recommending suitable nutrition therapies tailored to their individual needs. The specialist will provide nutrition counseling as necessary and engage in activities that promote patient-centered care within designated patient units. Compliance with departmental and hospital standards, objectives, and policies is essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the nutritional status of patients by analyzing relevant information from electronic medical records and collaborating with the interdisciplinary healthcare team. Utilize knowledge of nutrition screening and assessment techniques to identify the nutritional requirements of specific patient populations. Conduct nutrition-focused physical assessments.
- Document significant findings in the medical record in accordance with established policies.
- Deliver effective nutrition counseling to patients and their families as required.
- Review and evaluate nutrition care plans for effectiveness, suggesting modifications as necessary. Employ professional judgment to adapt guidelines, protocols, and standards of care to meet the evolving needs of patients.
- Engage in interdisciplinary rounds as appropriate, ensuring effective communication with healthcare team members.
- Assist with discharge planning as required.
- Mentor dietetic interns, guiding them through the competencies necessary for their rotations and providing constructive feedback for their evaluations.
- Contribute to departmental projects, including educational initiatives through nutrition-related in-services, interdepartmental programs, lectures, and community outreach efforts.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements:
- A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution, including completion of an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship.
- Minimum of 0 years of experience, with completion of an ACEND-accredited dietetic internship.
- Must possess registration as a dietitian (RD) from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) or be registration-eligible, having completed a dietetic internship from an ACEND-accredited program. If registration-eligible, the RD exam must be passed within three months of hire.
