We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated Special Education Assistant to join our team at the Dallas Independent School District. As a Special Education Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting students with special needs and helping them achieve their academic and personal goals.
Key Responsibilities- Support Student Learning: Assist students with special needs in the classroom, including providing individualized support and accommodations as needed.
- Prepare Instructional Materials: Help teachers prepare instructional materials and classroom displays to support student learning.
- Classroom Management: Assist with maintaining a neat and orderly classroom environment and preparing the classroom according to student needs.
- Inventory and Maintenance: Help with inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
- Administrative Support: Assist teachers with administrative tasks, such as keeping records and preparing reports.
- Substitute Support: Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers as needed.
- Physical Support: Assist students with physical disabilities, including transferring to and from wheelchairs, lifting, or positioning.
- Personal Care: Assist students with physical needs and personal care, including feeding, bathroom needs, and personal hygiene.
- Curriculum Support: Assist with classroom curriculum and instructional exercises assigned by the teacher.
- Behavior Management: Help manage the behavior of students, including intervening in crisis situations and restraining disruptive or dangerous student behavior as needed.
- Student Supervision: Help supervise students throughout the school day, including lunchroom, bus, and playground duty.
- Communication: Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of individual students and maintain confidentiality.
- Professional Development: Participate in staff development training programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Education: Accredited Senior High School Diploma or equivalent (U.S.A. equivalency), plus one of the following: Associate degree, 48 college credit hours, or pass an academic assessment.
- Certification: Paraprofessional certificate required from the State Board of Certification.
- Training: Successful completion of a specific training program for teacher assistants or six months of knowledge and skills acquired through work experience preferred.
- Skills: Demonstrated general knowledge of child growth/development and behavior characteristics, ability to work with people from diverse ethnic groups, organizational and interpersonal skills, initiative, and effective communication skills.
- Language: Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Travel throughout the district is integral to this job. A remote working environment/alternate work arrangement is not an option for campus-based employees/campus-based positions because regular and punctual attendance at the worksite and performing all duties at the worksite are essential job duties for all campus-based personnel.
