The Chemotherapy Registered Nurse delivers holistic care in an outpatient or healthcare environment for individuals undergoing treatment for cancer with antineoplastic medications and additional therapies. This role operates under the guidance of a physician and/or department head.

Qualifications:

Education: Must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program (Diploma, Associate, or Baccalaureate).

Licensure: Must hold a current and unrestricted nursing license in the practicing state; OCN and ONS chemotherapy certifications are required.

Experience: A minimum of two years of experience as a certified chemotherapy nurse is essential. Candidates must be proficient and willing to administer chemotherapy to oncology patients.

Certifications: CPR certification at the BLS/ACLS level; PALS may be necessary for certain pediatric clients; compliance with health screenings as mandated by specific facilities and regulatory bodies; OCN and ONS chemotherapy certifications; Covid-19 and current flu vaccinations are required.

Work Environment: Various healthcare settings with potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other infectious materials.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to ATC policies and procedures.
  • Follow nursing policies and procedures of the client facility.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of services rendered.
  • Ensure confidentiality in patient care and facility operations as per HIPAA regulations.
  • Effectively communicate necessary information to relevant personnel.
  • Deliver care while ensuring a safe and therapeutic environment.
  • Provide patient services in a respectful, non-discriminatory manner, honoring cultural diversity and individual rights.
  • Advocate for patient rights concerning advance directives.
  • Conduct continuous assessments of patients' physical and emotional needs, implementing appropriate interventions.
  • Administer chemotherapy and other treatments as prescribed by the physician.
  • Manage immunotherapy, blood transfusions, and symptom relief.
  • Coordinate resources both internally and externally.
  • Perform phlebotomy and access various chemotherapy ports and lines.
  • Initiate CPR as needed, following facility protocols and applicable advance directives.
  • Engage in ongoing education to maintain competency and meet state requirements.
  • Adhere to ethical standards and professional nursing practices as outlined by the American Nurses Association or equivalent organizations.
