This role is integral to Mercy's commitment to patient-centered care, embodying professionalism, respect, and compassion. The Registered Nurse collaborates with unit-specific team members to assess clinical issues, formulate care plans, and educate patients and their families.
Key Responsibilities- Facilitate effective communication of pertinent and clinically relevant information among patients, families, and colleagues during transitions of care to optimize patient outcomes.
- Exhibit proficient assessment, planning, intervention, coordination, and evaluation skills tailored to individual patient care plans.
- Continuously evaluate the needs of patients and families to deliver high-quality care aligned with a patient-centered model.
- Apply critical thinking and sound judgment to execute patient care plans, nursing interventions, and procedures.
- Maintain precise and timely documentation of nursing care to ensure comprehensive information integration for the healthcare team, adhering to hospital policies.
- Serve as a role model for colleagues, fostering a positive work environment to achieve departmental goals.
- Demonstrate respect and consideration for the dignity of all patients, families, visitors, and staff, ensuring a professional and courteous atmosphere.
- Supervise licensed and non-licensed personnel in the delivery of patient care as assigned.
- Communicate effectively and appropriately with patients of all ages, recognizing their needs, including non-verbal cues, fears, anxieties, and cultural differences.
- Respond to emergencies and life-threatening situations within the scope of practice.
- Promote and adhere to patient safety protocols throughout the care continuum.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with all members of the healthcare team.
- Provide ongoing education to patients and their families regarding care processes.
- Delegate tasks to registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified nursing assistants, patient care technicians, unit secretaries, and other relevant staff.
Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Integrate ethical principles and professional standards in caring for patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses, advocating for their preferences and wishes.
- Engage compassionately with patients, families, and healthcare team members regarding end-of-life discussions.
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including medical directors, social workers, chaplains, and other healthcare professionals, to establish comprehensive care plans for complex health situations.
- Strong foundation in fundamental nursing principles and practices.
- Demonstrated proficiency in unit-specific skills.
- Ability to deliver safe and effective basic nursing care.
- Exemplary customer service skills, encompassing both verbal and non-verbal communication.
- Foster a welcoming environment for all healthcare team members.
- Commitment to continuous self-improvement and professional development.
- A minimum of two years of experience in oncology, medical-surgical, or hospice nursing is preferred.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is preferred.
- Current registered nurse license in the state of Iowa or a compact state is required.
- Current Basic Life Support certification in accordance with American Heart Association standards is required.
- Completion of Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse/Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training is required, with certification submitted to Human Resources prior to employment.
- A valid driver's license and personal automobile insurance are required.
- Heavy lifting: Must be able to lift up to 15 lbs. frequently and up to 50 lbs. occasionally for patient transfers.
- Occasional lifting of up to 100 lbs. for controlled falls.
- Ability to lift 15 lbs. overhead occasionally.
- Frequent pushing and pulling of up to 20 lbs. and occasional pushing of up to 35 lbs.
- Capability to administer CPR.
