High-Energy Astronomy Software Specialist

We are seeking a highly skilled software specialist to join our team at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and optimizing software for high-energy astronomy research, focusing on the analysis of gamma-ray bursts, active galactic nuclei, pulsars, and colliding neutron stars. You will work closely with high-energy astronomers to design and implement new features and analysis methods, ensure correctness, performance, and usability, and maintain the continuous integration pipeline and software distribution through package managers.

The position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) and residency in the US for the past consecutive 3 years. Estimated annual salary is $140,000 - $200,000 based on experience and location. We offer competitive benefits, including life insurance, disability insurance, and employee recognition program.

Required:
  • B.S. in Astronomy, Physics, Computer Science, or related field
  • 2+ years of scientific analysis software development in Python and C++
  • 2+ years of experience with Linux or Unix operating systems and development environments.
  • 2+ years of experience on the command line and with scripting languages such as BASH (or other shells)
  • 2+ years of version control experience using git with Gitlab or Github
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and package managers
Desired:
  • A strong background in physical science and a broad interest in the scientific objectives of the Fermi mission or high-energy astrophysics in general
  • Experience with the specific tools currently used by the FSSC, including CMake, Azure, and Conda
  • Contribution to open-source software
  • Experience with markdown languages such as YAML and TOML
  • Experience with the FITS astronomical data file format and binary table extensions
  • Experience with open source astronomy data analysis software: cfitsio, HEASARC Ftools, or Astropy
