POSITION OVERVIEW:
Madagascar is recognized as a biodiversity hotspot, hosting a remarkable variety of frog species. The mid-high elevation rainforests of Madagascar provide a climate that is conducive to the spread of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a pathogen that poses a significant threat to amphibian populations globally. Our primary objective is to proactively establish disease mitigation strategies, such as the use of skin probiotics, to support amphibian conservation efforts. To achieve this, we have created a breeding colony of Madagascar frogs, representing various species. Our current focus is on developing effective captive breeding techniques, maintaining tadpole health, and producing viable froglets. By increasing our population of these frogs, we aim to conduct experimental studies to identify effective probiotic treatments for Madagascar frogs. Additionally, we are keen on observing and documenting the breeding behaviors of these lesser-known species.
The Bletz Lab is inviting undergraduate students to assist with various aspects of this research, particularly in the captive breeding initiatives within our amphibian colony. This position is available for the summer semester, with the potential for continued employment in future semesters based on performance.
