Compassionate Patient Support Volunteer

As a Patient Support Volunteer, you will engage directly with individuals receiving care from Rainbow Hospice, providing essential companionship and assistance to both patients and their families. This role is vital in ensuring that our patients feel supported in their homes, at our Inpatient Unit, or within Long Term Care Facilities.
Volunteers play a crucial part in the overall care experience, offering some of the most fulfilling and impactful opportunities within Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care. As a member of the Patient Care and Family Support team, you will deliver in-home services to those currently under our care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide respite care, friendly visits, and essential services such as errands, shopping, and light housekeeping.
- Offer emotional support and companionship, actively listening to the needs of patients and families.
- Collaborate as a key member of the Hospice interdisciplinary team, contributing to the care plan as needed.
- Accurately document volunteer hours and patient visit activities in a timely manner.
- Maintain open lines of communication with the volunteer coordinator, providing regular updates.
- Participate in bereavement follow-up with families when appropriate.
- Uphold confidentiality and adhere to all policies and procedures of Rainbow Hospice.
- Complete mandatory annual training and meet all health requirements.
- Engage in volunteer support and educational in-services, assisting in the training of new volunteers as necessary.
Availability:
We are looking for volunteers on weekdays, evenings, or weekends, ideally in flexible 3-4 hour time blocks based on your availability. Due to the nature of this role, specialized Patient Care Training is required to prepare volunteers for interactions with patients and families.
To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old, have successfully adjusted to personal losses without recent bereavement, and complete the volunteer training program. A background check and health screenings are mandatory, along with a commitment of at least one year of service, contributing 3-4 hours weekly. A supportive attitude towards hospice care and the ability to work with diverse cultural and religious backgrounds are essential. Strong communication skills and previous volunteer experience are preferred, along with independent transportation.
Rainbow Hospice and Palliative Care is a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving terminally ill patients and their families in the Chicago area. We strive to empower individuals to live with dignity and hope while navigating the challenges of loss and end-of-life care.
We also provide extensive bereavement services, including programs for children and teens, as well as educational initiatives and community outreach.
