Job Overview

Position: Housing Specialist – Tier I

Reports to: Supervising Housing Specialist

Status: Non-Exempt

Division: Housing Services

Location: Queens

Position Summary:

The ideal candidate will be tasked with delivering housing assistance to enable clients to navigate and resolve personal or societal challenges impacting their housing situation. The Housing Specialist will collaborate with case managers and legal professionals to formulate service plans aimed at securing permanent and stable housing while facilitating access to community resources. Cross-training and a comprehensive understanding of the functions within the Housing Services Department will be encouraged.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage with program participants to create service plans that address and mitigate issues affecting housing stability.
  • Support client intake, service planning, advocacy, and referral services in the absence of a case manager.
  • Maintain regular contact with clients to monitor progress on service plans.
  • Document and track case developments, entering relevant information into the Legalserver Database.
  • Participate in housing-related activities and workshops.
  • Assist clients in obtaining and reinstating benefits.
  • Help clients identify financial resources.
  • Advocate for and submit applications for rental assistance grants through charitable organizations.
  • Compile and submit documentation to HRA for Rental Assistance Grants and One Shot Deals.
  • Coordinate appointments with landlords and housing agents to provide clients with housing leads when relocation is necessary.
  • Work in partnership with legal services staff to assess client readiness for legal proceedings.
  • Ensure all clients, visitors, and colleagues are treated with kindness, respect, and dignity.
  • Uphold facility rules and regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Attend staff meetings and participate in committees as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
  • Demonstrate effective time management and prioritization skills.
  • Stay informed about new trends and developments in social services and related fields.
  • Perform general clerical duties as required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field with 0+ years of direct social service experience.
  • Associate degree in Human Services or a related field with 2+ years of direct social service experience preferred but not required.
  • High School Diploma/General Equivalent Diploma with 4+ years of direct social service experience preferred but not required.
  • Understanding of the challenges faced by homeless and special needs populations.
  • Familiarity with case work and case management methodologies.
  • Commitment to the mission of the Neighborhood Association.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently under pressure.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and efficiency.
  • Exhibit maturity, integrity, and sound judgment.
