St. James Parish Government is seeking a Utility Maintenance Technician I to join the Operations Department.
This position is responsible for the upkeep, repair, and installation of the public Gas and Water Distribution System. It plays a vital role during emergencies or natural disasters. The position is nonexempt, requiring a commitment of forty hours per week, and is classified as Safety Sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the St. James Parish Government Employee Handbook.
Individuals in this role are expected to operate independently with minimal oversight.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducting maintenance, repairs, and installations for the public gas and water distribution system
- Monitoring and documenting current usage data from gas and water meters
- Identifying gas and water leaks through equipment or visual inspection
- Assisting with the installation of wet taps on water and gas lines
- Entering various information and data into computer systems
- Performing other assigned tasks as needed
QUALIFICATION CRITERIA: To succeed in this role, candidates must meet each essential job requirement satisfactorily. The outlined criteria represent the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: A High School diploma or GED, along with three months of experience in Public Utility work, is required. Completion of all training requirements outlined in the Operations & Maintenance Plan and the Emergency Plan for natural gas systems is essential.
MATH SKILLS: Candidates must demonstrate proficiency in basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, and division using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY: Candidates should possess the ability to apply common sense understanding to execute instructions provided in written, oral, or diagram form. The ability to address problems involving multiple variables in standard situations is crucial for this role.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: A valid Louisiana Driver's License with a clean driving record is required. Participation in the Parish Utilities weekend and night callout roster is mandatory.
ADDITIONAL SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of equipment operation procedures and maintenance
- Ability to perform minor equipment maintenance and repairs
- Physical capability to handle labor-intensive tasks as required
- Proficiency in operating various office equipment
- Strong public relations skills
- Understanding of safety regulations in vehicle and equipment operation
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The role demands meeting specific physical requirements. Accommodations will be made for individuals with disabilities. While performing duties, employees must engage in various physical activities such as reaching, handling objects, climbing, sitting, standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, and lifting up to 80 pounds. Vision capabilities required include close and peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and adjusting focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Employees may encounter varying conditions such as extreme heat, cold, proximity to moving parts, and exposure to chemicals. Additionally, they may work in elevated locations, humid environments, and in settings with high noise levels.
