Job Summary

This position is an exciting opportunity for a skilled Anesthesiologist to join our team at the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. As a key member of our healthcare team, you will be responsible for administering anesthesia to patients, providing continuous monitoring, and ensuring the highest level of patient care.

Responsibilities
  • Administer anesthesia to patients, rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery and procedures.
  • Provide continuous and vigilant monitoring of the patient's physical response to anesthetic agents.
  • Maintain excellence in endotracheal intubation and extubation, airway management, and the use of various airway adjuncts.
  • Develop and implement anesthetic plans, selecting appropriate agents and techniques for patients with severe comorbidities.
  • Perform pre-anesthetic evaluations, interpreting arterial blood gases, EKGs, and other relevant laboratory results.
  • Manage the anesthesia process, including induction, maintenance, and emergence from general, regional, and monitored anesthesia cases.
  • Recognize and respond to abnormal patient responses, initiating corrective measures as needed.
  • Administer IV fluids, blood products, and monitor for adverse responses.
  • Document patient status in the anesthesia record and teach and evaluate residents and students.
  • Assume responsibility for controlled substances, adhering to department and hospital policies, as well as state and federal guidelines.
Requirements
  • U.S. citizenship (non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy).
  • Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
