Position Overview:

The University of Iowa is looking for a Research Scientist to join the Department of Community and Behavioral Health. This role is integral to the National AI/AN Childhood Traumatic Stress Center and the Mental Health Awareness Training (MHAT) Program. The selected candidate will collaborate with a team and report to the Co-Directors of the respective initiatives. The Research Scientist will engage with tribal leaders, youth expert panels, and community elders to assess needs for upcoming projects and program execution. Responsibilities include supporting research initiatives by managing IRB applications, enrolling and monitoring participants, gathering data, ensuring the reliability and validity of collected information, and analyzing qualitative data while assisting with the daily operations of a multi-project research center.

Key Responsibilities:

Research Activities:

- Develop educational materials and project frameworks.
- Adapt existing training programs to meet the cultural needs of first responders.
- Modify current curricula and resources for professionals and families working with Native children and youth in military contexts.
- Design surveys and interview methodologies to gather qualitative insights.
- Employ diverse methods for data collection, including surveys, interviews, focus groups, and document analysis.
- Oversee participant tracking throughout various study phases: recruitment, enrollment, and response management.
- Assist with mailings, including processing questionnaires and managing study materials.
- Conduct comprehensive literature reviews through thorough research and analysis.

Training Implementation:

- Create and execute training programs for first responders in the community.
- Collaborate with team members to design training for Native Veterans and their families.
- Conduct interviews and facilitate focus groups as necessary.
- Participate in team meetings and support the Youth Expert Panelists.
- Ensure compliance with all study protocols, including the development and submission of IRB applications.
- Prepare and implement research tools such as targeted surveys and interview guides.

Data Analysis and Reporting:

- Conduct data preparation, including quality control checks and report generation.
- Contribute to the creation of newsletters based on collected data.
- Analyze qualitative data and formulate recommendations.
- Manage qualitative datasets and verify information for publication.
- Develop and review IRB applications and provide ongoing reviews for research projects.

Administrative and Project Coordination:

- Organize meetings for project investigators and Expert Panelists.
- Maintain access lists and monitor reporting deadlines for effective project management.
- Initiate requests for necessary resources and uphold data confidentiality.
- Prepare progress reports and establish internal deadlines to ensure adherence to research protocols.

Collaboration and Supervision:

- Work closely with program staff to foster a high-quality research environment.

Qualifications:

- Bachelor’s degree in public health or a related field, with one or more years of relevant experience in social science research or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in managing and analyzing qualitative data and generating reports.
- Excellent communication skills, particularly in writing.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary settings.
- Proficiency in spreadsheet, word processing, and database software, along with email communication.
- Valid US driving license and ability to travel as required.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Master’s degree in Public Health.
