Position Overview: WIC Professional
Under the general supervision of the Program Director, the WIC Professional is responsible for certifying the eligibility of program participants by assessing nutritional risk for pregnant women, postpartum women, breastfeeding mothers, and children up to five years of age. This role includes providing essential nutrition education to program participants.
The WIC Professional acts as the qualified authority for determining program eligibility and certification. This involves evaluating individual anthropometric, biochemical, and dietary data to either certify or deny participation based on nutritional risk. Key responsibilities include:
- Conducting necessary assessments such as measuring height/length and weight, and performing hemoglobin tests.
- Completing required certification procedures using Focus (WIC software).
- Carrying out intake procedures for program applicants, including interviewing to gather demographic information and assessing income eligibility.
- Delivering nutrition and health education focused on maternal and child health in accordance with program guidelines.
- Performing additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule
Typically scheduled Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in foods and nutrition, dietetics, community nutrition, or a closely related field, or a current RN license recognized by the State of Iowa Board of Nursing.
- If applicable, must maintain a current Registered Nurse license.
- Reliable transportation is required.
- Preference for candidates who are licensed or registered Dietitians.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish is preferred.
