CT7B Specialized Care Unit
Number of beds on unit: 24
Patient Demographics:
The Specialized Care Unit is a 24-bed facility dedicated to the management of acutely unstable patients who do not qualify for Intensive Care but still necessitate frequent, advanced evaluations and interventions.
Specific patient conditions that require Specialized Care include complex multi-trauma, uncompensated sepsis, continuous non-invasive ventilation, stroke, complicated withdrawal from substances, and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
The unit also features an Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) where patients experiencing seizure-like episodes can be safely taken off medication to purposefully induce seizures, providing critical information to the Epilepsy Team for treatment planning.
Nurse to Patient ratio: 1:3Department Culture and Resources:
The Specialized Care Unit is characterized by a dynamic, collaborative environment. Our team works closely with physician partners and support staff to achieve optimal patient outcomes. We maintain a robust Partnership Committee that convenes monthly. Our unit is supported by a dedicated educator, a quality outcomes coordinator, two nurse supervisors, and charge nurses.
Common Nursing Skills and Equipment Utilized:
Regular Q4 hour comprehensive RN assessments, Q2 hour vital signs monitoring, continuous cardiac observation by the primary RN, Foley/IV/NG insertions, and management of arterial lines, central lines, and chest tubes. Equipment frequently used includes IV pumps, feeding pumps, and lift devices. Common IV medications administered include amiodarone, diltiazem, insulin for DKA, dobutamine, heparin, and octreotide.
Key Responsibilities:
Execute all duties and responsibilities specific to the unit's scope of service. Implement procedures and theories pertinent to the specialized area of practice.
Maintain current and precise documentation of nursing care provided to ensure the integration of information for the healthcare team.
Conduct initial assessments upon patient admission and formulate an appropriate care plan in alignment with unit standards based on patient and family needs.
Implement the care plan, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Adjust the care plan based on ongoing evaluations.Take accountability for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or rectifying safety hazards and incidents.
Engage in direct communication with others when necessary to resolve issues. Provide constructive feedback to support the professional growth of peers, and collaborate with colleagues to enhance knowledge.
Identify personal learning needs and proactively seek appropriate solutions.
Fulfill all departmental competency requirements.
Ensure effective communication with patients and families through meaningful hourly rounding, bedside shift reports, and whiteboards.
Collaborate with the critical care team for Specialized Care patients.
Work alongside hospitalists for Specialized Care patients.
