Deputy Building Official

Okaloosa County, FL is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Deputy Building Official to join our team. As a key member of our Building Department, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of our community by enforcing building codes and regulations.

The Deputy Building Official will supervise inspectors and plans examiners, conduct inspections and certifications of new, existing, and altered buildings and structures, and provide guidance on building code compliance. This is a challenging and rewarding role that requires strong leadership and technical skills.

• Supervise and conduct inspections and certifications of new, existing, and altered buildings and structures
• Provide guidance on building code compliance and interpret building codes and regulations
• Supervise inspectors and plans examiners and provide training and development opportunities
• Coordinate inspections and establish inspector territories and personnel training programs
• Conduct pre-submission conferences with design professionals, contractors, and developers to ensure understanding of code and statute requirements
• Advises builders, owners, contractors, and architects concerning building and structural problems and assists in modifying plans/specifications/blueprints to ensure code compliance
• Reviews construction project files and provides approval for Certificates of Occupancy
• Presents evidence to the Code Enforcement Board regarding code and ordinance violations
• Investigates complaints of defective projects and notifies responsible persons of defects and issues instructions for corrections
• Performs follow-up inspections and reports compliance or non-compliance of previous violations
• Prepares records and reports of inspections performed covering conditions found, actions taken, as well as names of owners, builders, and addresses of inspections

• Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, Building Construction, or a related field
• Minimum of six (6) years' experience as an architect, engineer, plans examiner, building code inspector, registered certified contractor, or construction superintendent, with five (5) years in a supervisory/management capacity
• State certification as a Building Code Administrator or the ability to obtain certification within six (6) months of employment
• Valid driver's license

• Experience in both local government building regulation and as a licensed private general, residential, or building contractor
