Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Veterinarian to join our team at Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing medical care and services to animals in our shelter, as well as overseeing the overall health and well-being of our animal population.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and direct shelter medical operations, ensuring sound veterinary medical practices and compliance with federal and state laws, local ordinances, and departmental regulations.
  • Oversee the maintenance of shelter drug and supply inventory, meeting and maintaining DEA requirements.
  • Continuously update and improve the medical management program, ensuring high-quality medical care and services.
  • Evaluate animals, perform diagnostics, make diagnoses, develop treatment plans, and perform surgeries on shelter animals.
  • Apply departmental rules, regulations, and operating procedures, updating guidelines as required to ensure the shelter operates within animal industry standards.
  • Plan, assign, and review the work of subordinate personnel, performing evaluations and making decisions for Animal Care and Enforcement operations.
  • Monitor social media platforms to ensure staff maintain shelter goals and objectives.
  • Effectively communicate with the public and training personnel, remaining cognizant of varying backgrounds.
  • Ensure employees achieve personal and professional goals through good training and leadership, maintaining good records.
  • Manage, cope, and work through high-pressure situations.
  • Oversee that appropriate shelter personnel are trained in euthanasia and rabies vaccinations.
  • Maintain interagency cooperation between federal, state, county, and municipal agencies, including non-profit animal advocacy groups.
  • Represent the department at meetings, events, and forums with inter- and intra-agency groups.
  • Review various reports, databases, and studies to provide information to the public and media on animal welfare and shelter-related topics, preparing narratives and statistical reports, studies, and findings for budget and project needs.
Requirements
  • Graduation with a Doctorate Degree in Veterinary Medicine with a minimum of three (3) years of shelter medicine experience, along with high-volume spay and neuter and shelter management experience.
  • Licensed to practice Veterinary Medicine in the State of North Carolina.
  • Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications/Certifications
  • Five (5) years of shelter medicine experience, along with high-volume spay and neuter and shelter management experience.
  • DEA License, Certified Euthanasia Trainer, Shelter Management and Leadership Certificate.
