The Elizabeth Freeman Center (EFC) is in search of a dedicated Legal Support Advocate to provide essential support, advocacy, and crisis intervention for individuals affected by domestic and sexual violence within the judicial system through our SAFEPLAN Program.
This role is primarily situated within the Northern Berkshire District Court, with potential responsibilities extending to Central Berkshire and other court locations as necessary.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver crisis intervention, support, and vital information to individuals seeking protection orders related to domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
- Assist clients in completing necessary protection order application forms and accompany them during court proceedings.
- Develop personalized safety plans tailored to each client's unique situation.
- Evaluate circumstances and urgent needs, providing assistance with shelter, safety, basic necessities, and transportation.
- Connect clients with both internal and external community resources, ensuring appropriate follow-up.
- Advocate on matters concerning housing, financial support, benefits, child welfare, and medical and mental health services.
- Foster and enhance collaborative relationships with court personnel, including clerks, judges, prosecutors, and victim witness advocates.
- Engage in outreach and partnership initiatives with community organizations, contributing to educational efforts and distributing program materials at community events.
- Participate in office, phone, and crisis intervention coverage as assigned.
- Maintain professional boundaries with clients and adhere to strict confidentiality protocols while performing other duties to support the agency's mission.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience working with individuals affected by domestic and/or sexual violence.
- Background in advocacy, community organizing, or community engagement.
- Knowledge of and/or interest in the judicial system.
- Strong skills in verbal and written communication, technology, and teamwork.
- Demonstrated commitment to providing holistic, accessible, trauma-informed, and strength-based services to survivors.
- Bachelor's or Associate Degree (may be waived for relevant experience).
- Bilingual proficiency in English/Spanish or other commonly spoken languages.
- Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check-CORI, suitability to work with minors, and possession of a valid driver's license with reliable transportation.
Work Hours: This position requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, with court hours from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Flexibility for occasional evening and weekend outreach activities is necessary.
Compensation and Benefits:
The Elizabeth Freeman Center is committed to providing all staff with competitive salaries and benefits, a supportive and engaged work environment, training in best practices, opportunities for career development, and the resources to engage in meaningful and impactful work.
The starting pay for this position is $22 per hour, with an additional $1.00/hour for bilingual skills, plus increments for other frequently used languages, special skills, education, and a year-end stipend based on funding availability.
EFC covers 85% of health insurance premiums and contributes to a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). The organization offers generous paid leave and additional benefits.
