Institutional Veterinarian

As the Institutional Veterinarian at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, you will play a crucial role in overseeing the health and welfare of laboratory animals utilized in scientific studies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough examinations and provide medical treatment to laboratory animals, ensuring their health and compliance with ethical standards.
- Consult with research personnel on anesthetic protocols, surgical methods, euthanasia practices, and overall animal care.
- Manage and monitor budgets and financial activities related to the Laboratory Animal Research Center (LARC), ensuring accurate record-keeping and compliance with institutional policies.
- Lead discussions on research projects and daily health assessments, coordinating care plans for animals.
- Supervise LARC staff, conducting performance evaluations and ensuring adherence to productivity standards.
- Deliver specialized training and technical support to researchers and technicians in various animal care techniques.
- Ensure compliance with NIH guidelines, federal and state regulations, and AAALAC standards for all research animals.
- Participate in Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) meetings and protocol discussions.
- Prepare and submit reports as required by the System Veterinarian.
- Review and update animal care policies and standard operating procedures as necessary.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and be licensed to practice in Texas or eligible to take the state examination. Experience in laboratory animal medicine is essential. Preferred candidates will have completed a post-doctoral residency in this field and have 3-5 years of relevant experience.
Work Environment:
This position is based in El Paso and requires a commitment to maintaining high standards of animal care and research integrity. The role may involve travel up to 25% as necessary.
Compensation:
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, following institutional pay guidelines.
