Job Title: Behavioral Health Care Advocate

At UnitedHealth Group, we're committed to helping people live healthier lives and making the health system work better for everyone. As a Behavioral Health Care Advocate, you'll play a critical role in supporting individuals with complex mental health needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate member education and involvement of caregivers in the delivery of interventions
  • Provide advocacy and support to members and their families, including caregiver support and referrals to applicable resources
  • Ensure members understand treatment options and are effectively linked to treatment resources
  • Promote health, wellness, and optimal psychosocial functioning for members (identify caregiver gaps, facilitate education, and respite support)
  • Consider the member's needs holistically to identify gaps in care requiring intervention
  • Exhibit excellent customer service in engaging providers in collaborative planning
  • Create and maintain appropriate clinical records
  • Participate in clinical rounds with other team members and external healthcare management organizations/vendors, as applicable
  • Conduct condition-specific research to meet member needs
  • Maintain success stories for program promotion
  • Provide case management support for individuals meeting diagnostic requirements, including engagement of members and/or families and support throughout the treatment continuum
  • Explain authorization processes
  • Complete discharge follow-up and, if needed, discharge planning/support
Requirements:
  • Licensed Master's degree in Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or Marriage and Family Counseling; or Licensed Ph.D, or a Registered Nurse with 2+ years of experience in behavioral health
  • Active, unrestricted, independent license in the state of residence
  • 2+ years of post-licensure experience in a related mental health environment
  • 1+ years of case management experience
  • Intermediate level proficiency in MS Office Suite, including Word, Teams, and Excel
  • Dedicated home office space and ability to leverage existing reliable high-speed internet (Cable Broadband, DSL, or Fiber)
  • Ability to work an 8-hour shift within the business hours of 8am-8pm EST
Preferred Qualifications:
  • BSN (for RNs)
  • Medical/behavioral setting experience (e.g., hospital, managed care organization, or joint medical/behavioral outpatient practice)
  • Discharge planning experience
  • Chart review experience
  • Experience consulting with facility and/or hospital staff to coordinate treatment plans
  • Experience working in community/county mental health
  • Dual diagnosis experience with mental health and substance abuse
  • Experience working in an environment requiring coordination of benefits and utilization of multiple groups and resources for patients
  • Experience with government-funded programs
