  6. An acceptable Motor Vehicle Record is required.
  7. Meeting the suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 is essential.
  8. A driving safety record that meets insurance requirements is necessary.
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports To: Transportation Specialist

Background Check Required: (Ala. Code §§ 16-22A-5) Upon receiving an employment offer, candidates will be required to submit clear fingerprints for a background review by the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Background checks must not exceed ten (10) years in age.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  1. Capability to operate the vehicle safely along a designated route according to a specific timetable, which may necessitate driving during early morning and evening hours.
  2. Ability to drive in accordance with all traffic and safety laws and regulations, including defensive driving practices and adherence to posted speed limits.
  3. Physical dexterity, coordination, mobility, and visual acuity to safely operate a school bus.
Essential Functions:
  1. Compliance with all traffic laws.
  2. Conducting required pre-trip inspections in accordance with state-mandated guidelines.
  3. Observing all safety regulations applicable to school buses.
  4. Maintaining discipline among students while on the bus.
  5. Reporting discipline issues to the appropriate authority.
  6. Transporting students to and from educational institutions.
  7. Providing transportation for students during field trips, athletic events, and other extracurricular activities, often during evening hours.
  8. Preparing for and assisting students in evacuating the bus and transporting safety/first-aid equipment for injury care.
  9. Ensuring safety measures are followed when students are boarding and disembarking.
  10. Promptly reporting all accidents to the transportation office and relevant officials.
  11. Participating in periodic safety meetings.
  12. Maintaining monthly route reports and daily pre-trip inspection records.
  13. Keeping the bus clean and orderly on a daily basis.
  14. Identifying needs and arranging for necessary repairs and maintenance.
  15. Regulating heating, cooling, and ventilation systems on the bus for passenger comfort.
  16. Adhering to assigned schedules and discharging students only at authorized stops.
  17. Notifying the appropriate authority in case of mechanical failures or delays.
  18. Exercising responsible leadership during out-of-town school trips.
  19. Transporting only authorized individuals.
  20. Enforcing regulations against smoking, eating, and drinking on the bus.
  21. Lifting as necessary.
  • This position is subject to the Students First Act of 2011. The Alabama Department of Education reserves the right to fill this position by transferring a qualified applicant who is already employed by the organization.
  • Under the Students First Act of 2011, no credit toward tenure or non-probationary status is earned in the initial school year of employment if the hire date occurs after September 30th.
Expected Employment: 184 days (full year)

Evaluation: According to established organizational policies and administrative procedures.

Salary Range: According to the Alabama Department of Education Salary Schedule (Salary based on full-year employment)

Up to 10 years of experience will be acknowledged for new employees who provide documentation of full-time experience in the relevant area.
