Job SummaryAs a skilled Carpenter, you will be responsible for assembling, installing, and repairing wooden, metal, and other furnishings in ships using hand tools, power tools, and measuring instruments following blueprints or instructions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lays out and cuts wooden parts
  • Sizes and manufactures shipping crates for parts and materials
  • Fabricates, assembles, and installs deck houses, doors, joiner bulkheads, and other structural and non-structural members
  • Fabricates and installs wood and steel paneling
  • Lays linoleum on decks or ladder treads
  • Installs fiberglass, cork, and urethane insulation
  • Cuts and fits glass in skylights, cabins, or other parts of the ship
  • Attaches metal fittings to wooden parts of ships
  • Works with minimal supervision
  • Prepares support flat and shaped blocks for launching and dry docking of ships
  • May be assigned miscellaneous tasks outside of the craft as required

Requirements
  • Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, job specifications, and carpentry manuals
  • Fairly extensive practical knowledge of carpentry work, preferably in the marine field
  • Able to operate carpenter's power and hand tools, and to construct simple structures and framing
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics

Work EnvironmentThe work environment is typically wet or humid, with exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold or heat, and risk of electrical shock and vibration. The employee must be able to work in confined spaces and wear required personal protective equipment as prescribed under OSHA standards.
